help save your local bar

Budweiser has started an initiative call Save Pub Life, which is a campaign where they will match what you buy as a gift card for your local pub. So, for example, if you buy a £10 gift card, you get £10 to spend when the pubs reopen, but the pub itself will get £20. It’s running across the UK, and includes some of our favourite LGBT venues including The Regent in Edinburgh, Klozet Bar in Dundee and The Planet bar in Edinburgh. You can check on their website to see if your favourite bar is part of the scheme, but one word of caution - for some reason a lot of Scottish bars are listed as being in England. This may be because the companies’ headquarters these bars are leased from are in England.   So help keep your local favourite bar afloat by participating in the scheme. https://savepublife.com

Military Wives - Film Review

Military Wives - Film Review Reaching into my box of cinematic clichés I find a choice of heart-warming, feelgood or life-affirming as the most appropriate description of Military Wives; the latest offering from director Peter Cattaneo. And it comes as no surprise that his biggest hit was the Full Monty. There is real symmetry between both stories as the opening titles fade to the words ‘inspired by true events’. It has a cosiness and familiarity that resonates; ordinary people conquering adversity simply by sticking together. The wives contemplate life as their partners leave for a six month tour of Afghanistan. Colonel’s wife Kate (Kristin Scott-Thomas) is grieving for son Jamie who was killed serving in the same province. The wife of newly appointed RSM Lisa (Sharon Horgan) is struggling with wayward daughter Frankie (India Amarteifio); and by virtue of hubby's rank is now in charge of pastoral care. Meanwhile, newly married rookie Sarah (Amy James-Kelly) feels l...

Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs - Viscerals

Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs - Viscerals The third album proper for Newcastle’s Pigs Pigs Pi.. oh fuck it we’ll just call them Pigs x7, anyway as I was saying this is the third album of grungy stoner metal, with a hint of prog thrown in for good measure. It's a (deliberately) ugly affair, festering somewhere between Sleep and Sabbath, the guitars are heavy as rusted steel girders and have the same sparkle about them too, juxtaposed against this the squealing feedback of the secondary guitar like a voice of desperation howling out into a smoke-stained night. It is horrifying in the correct way. Speaking of voices screaming into the desolation (just what you need on these long distressing nights of isolation) lead vocalist Matt Baty cuts through the gloom with some doom of his own, he is particularly guttural on ‘World Crust’ spewing out “Make ends meet!” like punches to the head. Elsewhere on ‘Blood and Butter’ the vocals are swapped for a particularly g...

The Invisible Man film review

The Invisible Man film review ★★★★ Directed by Leigh Whannell Written by Leigh Whannell Starring Elisabeth Moss Aldis Hodge Harriet Dyer Leigh Whannell likes him some mad science. Two years ago the Saw and Insidious writer found his footing as a director with the unreasonably entertaining Upgrade. In what amounted to Knight Rider as imagined by David Cronenberg, the film gave the old yin/yang concept a robotics feel thanks to the work of an evil genius. The evil genius concept is back for Whannell’s reimagining of The Invisible Man. But the most interesting thing about this version of the old H.G. Wells tale is that the man—invisible or not—plays second fiddle. Instead of the existential ponderings that generally underscore cinematic Invisible Man retellings, Whannell uses this story to examine sexual politics, abuse, control and agency. It’s a laudable aim, but the reason it works is casting. How fucking great is Elisabeth Moss? Not just in ...

Thundercat - It Is What It Is

Thundercat - It Is What It Is   2017’s ‘Drunk’ was a massive hit for Thundercat, laid back soulful RnB with the ‘Cat’s silky smooth falsetto, ‘It Is What It Is’ has a lot to live up to. The first thing to notice is that he’s paired back the amount of tracks to a more manageable 15 (Drunk had 23 tracks on it) so it isn’t overstuffed however it is still in the same jazz/RnB/soul style but sports a more eclectic palate, for example, the first two tracks have that dream-like feel to them that flowed through the previous album but then there’s a stylistic jump into a more urgent Jazz style on ‘I Love Louis Cole’ as evidenced in the rapid drums and galloping bass which then gives way to a smooth funk vibe on ‘Black Qualls’ (Also featuring Steve Arrington and Childish Gambino). Thundercat has a tendency to mine the same keyboard sounds and riffs throughout the album which gives a sense of consistency but can lend a slightly repetitive feel at times, fortunately, he doesn’t h...

James Barr and Dan Hudson, hosts of A Gay and a NonGay podcast

Interview with James Barr and Dan Hudson, hosts of A Gay and a NonGay podcast We had a chat with James Barr (gay) and Dan Hudson (nongay), hosts of the UK’s biggest LGBTQ+ award-winning podcast A Gay and A NonGay , who will be taking a live version of their much-loved show on a UK tour in September after the dates were changed from March.   During the lockdown, they are still posting new episodes for your enjoyment.  https://www.gaynongay.com/podcast   **** Hi both, can you tell us a bit about how the podcast started and why you wanted to create it? Dan : My girlfriend Talia moved abroad and suggested that I look after her gay friend while she was away!   James : I wasn’t really into it at first, because I mean, who wants to hang out with a straight man?!   It’s since grown into an award-winning podcast with Radio Times calling it “one of the most fundamentally kind and funny podcasts in Britain” – how does it feel to be “podcast famo...
