One of Them contains as many multitudes as its author: glorious nostalgia, wicked showbiz gossip, a stirring history of a civil rights movement, a sorrowfully clear-eyed exposition of Britain's standing in Europe, and an unforgettable love story. Told with warmth, wit and humanity, it is an account of a life lived both left-of-field and firmly embedded in the heart of all that makes Britain liberal and good. https://amzn.to/39j4DjE to buy click The extraordinary story of how a singular group of women in a pivotal time and place – Paris, Between the Wars – fostered the birth of the Modernist movement. Celebrity Best Home Cook 2021 starts tonight and one of the contestant is Gareth Thomas

Hello Gareth, how does your background and experience help you in the kitchen? On the rugby pitch of course you have to be balanced on your feet, which helps in a fast paced kitchen when you’re moving constantly. Also, I can pass food around the kitchen with both left and right hand, which is a surprising one, but incredibly helpful! What is your home cooked signature dish? I love making Glamorgan sausages, which is the most traditional Welsh dish that I know and one I remember trying as a young kid. It’s a Welsh vegetarian sausage made from cheese, leeks and breadcrumbs. What is your earliest memory of home cooking - who was it with, and what did you make? I remember making beans on toast for my husband Stephen and still managed to somehow mess it up and get in a panic! I burnt the toast and forgot to do the washing up. What can viewers look forward to from you in this competition? The fact that I will try anything, I don’t stay in my comfort zone and I’m always prepared to go t...

Desiree Burch is on BBC's Celebrity Best Home Cook from 26th Jan

Hello Desiree, what is your home cooked signature dish? And how did it come about? It’s a wonderous dessert monstrosity called Monkey Bread that’s basically a bundt tin baked mountain of cinnamon rolls. I tend to do desserts for dinner parties or holidays and found a recipe for this in my 20s. After bringing it to a Friendsgiving dinner one year, it became routinely requested well into my 30s among friend gatherings. Claudia, Mary, Chris and Angela are coming to your house for dinner, what’s on the menu? Probably something not particularly British. It’s easier to be impressed if it’s not something you normally eat. Possibly just a simple grilled salmon with some roasted vegetables. I like to focus on pudding, so there’d be a sweet pie of some sort to top it all off. What is your earliest memory of home cooking? Who was it with, and what did you make? It would have been Saturday morning breakfast as a kid. Spam, eggs and fried potatoes. That breakfast was on point for years! Tell ...

Stephen Fry talks about It's A Sin

Have you seen It’s a Sin yet? I have, I’m so proud to be a part of it, it’s just extraordinary. Those young men are just astounding. It’s really powerful television. The shock of remembering the PPE and the masks appearing… Of course, we had no idea when we were making it that that was going to have such a strong meaning throughout 2020. There’s an extra importance to it, you could say.   Who is Arthur Garrison? He’s a particularly repressed figure because he doesn’t think he is gay, he’s that kind of gay who reckons if you’re the active partner in a relationship, to put it delicately, with a younger man like Roscoe then you’re not gay. It ignores the basis of being gay or indeed heterosexual, which is your ability to love.   How would you describe his relationship with Roscoe? The sad thing is, when he’s with Roscoe there’s a tenderness and genuine sort of affection, but he’s far too afraid. What you can’t respect is the hypocrisy of a politician who behaves one way wh...

Jan Burnett from Spare Snare talks about their new BBC Sessions Box set

Spare Snare has now been going for over thirty years and are considered by many (Including us at Scene Alba) to be one of Scotland’s best bands. They’ve just released a 42 track box set of BBC sessions from 1995 to 2018 and our music editor Hugh Haggerty was lucky enough to have a chat with singer/songwriter Jan Burnett about the set. Hi Jan, it's a box set and a half isn’t it, 42 tracks! It's a little thing, it's a little clamshell! But I’m really pleased with it. I work in an office during the day and my wife works from home due to the pandemic so when I come home I go hide for an hour and a half before tea time and this is what I’ve been doing. It's always been an ambition to get it done, get something done with the BBC. How did it come about? Autumn last year I found I could get the tracks for free. If I were to go to the BBC to licence them, they would ask for a certain amount of money, which we don’t have. But if you’re a label and the artist and a member of AIM...
