New LGBTQI Comedy Awards

The SAM Awards are new independent LGBTQ+ comedy awards from Scene Alba Magazine.  We had hoped to launch the Sammy last year as part of our 5th birthday celebrations but, as with all things fun, they had to be put on hold because of Covid19.  Now that the Fringe Festival 2021 has been given the go head, we are keen to launch them to coincide with that. There are two categories; best solo performance, and best ensemble performance.  The solo award is for anyone who falls under the LGBTQI banner, and the ensemble is for a group or play that has LGBTQI theme or character. Each category has a £500 prize, so that’s enough money to cover a night accommodation of your run. If this applies to your show, or if you have seen a show you like, then send us a message and we will go check it out and consider it for the award.  mail@scenealba.co.uk The Sammy will be presented to the comedy shows we deem to have been the best at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland...

John Grant - Boy From Michigan ⅘

John Grant - Boy From Michigan ⅘ Digging deep into his own personal history on this his fifth solo album, John Grant is revealing his genesis. Contemplative, ‘Boy From Michigan’ is imbued with the cold winds of his adopted homeland of Iceland.  The album’s sound is one of frozen beauty, the autographic tales are wrapped in the type of early eighties electronica that the BBC Radiophonic Workshop used to sonically illustrate the sci-fi trappings of 1980’s Doctor Who. So there is a real feeling of nostalgia for those of us of an older vintage. Given that Grant has a tendency to lean to the darker viewpoint of life, it's refreshing to see him paint generally warm songs of his childhood. As always John’s voice is magnificent, warm and baroque. Musically it's not as varied as previous album ‘Love Is Magic’ and the songs sit together as a full suite rather than the scattershot mix of differing styles.  Not as immediate as earlier works, 'Boy From Michigan’ takes a few listens to r...

The Go Team - Get Up Sequences Part One ⅗

The Go Team - Get Up Sequences Part One ⅗ Cut ‘n’ paste fanatics The Go Team are back with more blasts of summery foot stompers and it's very much business as usual. Cutesy vocals, truckful of samples and big thumping drums. There’s no other setting for the Go Team except ebullient, seventies vibes running through each track and while they are experts in their field there doesn’t seem to be much scope for other styles or even darker sounds. Everything is punched up to ridiculously cheerful levels, it feels almost overwhelming and ten of these track one after the other leaves you dizzy. ‘Get Up Sequences Part One’ is obviously a well made album but is possibly just too full of sunshine for one sitting. Needs a little bit of rain.

Aisling Bea talks about life and season 2 of This Way Up

Congratulations on the success of series one and your breakthrough talent BAFTA win in 2020! How did it feel, and did you expect This Way Up to resonate with viewers the way it did? Thank you! It felt like a very amazing moment. On the morning of the BAFTAs, I had been knocked off my bike and felt lucky to be alive, so it definitely put the BAFTA into perspective. The awards were virtual due to lockdown, so I won watching it in my sling and flip flops, in the garden with a few pals and it ended up feeling far more special as a result. Can you describe Aine in three words? Funny, dreamy, speedy. There are some real joyful and simultaneously thought-provoking moments this series. What is your favourite memory either on or off-screen? Truthfully shooting the show in the winter during a national lockdown was incredible difficult on many levels, but one moment I remember laughing my head off was with my brilliant makeup designer Lisa Kennedy who also did series one, she kept me sane d...
